Present and Future

Today, UNMC students have access to a plethora of medical simulations, including anatomical models, 3D printing, standardized patient actors, holographic experiences. Additionally, students have access to several simulation spaces, like the Sorrell Clinical Simulation Lab; Jeffery P. Gold, MD, Virtual Hospital; the Home Care Unit; and the Simulation Ambulance.

iEXCEL

The Interprofessional Experiential Center for Enduring Learning (iEXCEL) is UNMC’s transformative program creating a new model for health care education, training, and research. Housed in the state-of-the-art Dr. Edwin G. & Dorothy Balbach Davis Global Center, iEXCEL offers a wide variety of learning technologies including advanced clinical simulations, surgical trainings, and visualization environments. This skills-based education model is intended to train health care professionals at all levels and in all disciplines to meet the inevitable changes in medicine that will occur over a lifetime of clinical practice. The model includes learning new techniques and procedures, and adopting new technologies—in safe, simulated health care settings.

Holograms

Optical holography was created in the early 1960s, thanks to the development of the laser. As a research and teaching tool, holography is the only technique that enables the viewer to see an object in 3D from all angles. As holography develops, it provides opportunities for non-invasive studies of anatomy in patients, including diagnostics and pre-surgical preparations. UNMC’s iEXCEL program provides students with access to this groundbreaking technology, preparing them for working in the continually evolving digital era of medicine.

Simulated Learning Environments

Realistic simulated hospital units provide a space for students to learn clinical competencies and team communication. From operating rooms, pediatric units, and labor and delivery to emergency training and procedural skills labs, UNMC students have access to a wide variety of simulations to prepare themselves for real-world experiences.
