Long known for its academic reputation, in the past few years the UNMC College of Nursing has made dramatic strides forward in facilities, faculty, curriculum, research programs, learning technologies, clinical practice initiatives, and global educational partnerships. The College of Nursing building was constructed at a cost of $3.45 million in 1974. The building has five levels with a total of 69,100 square feet.

College of Pharmacy, 1976

College of Pharmacy

Named the Joseph D. & Millie E. Williams Science Hall in 2014
Built 1975

Built in 1975 at a cost of $3.5 million, the former College of Pharmacy building has five levels with a total of 65,200 square feet. In 1989, the building needed major structural changes that included adding structural columns and new exterior wall material. In 2014, the building was named in honor of Joseph D. & Millie E. Williams, and now houses the Office of Global Engagement, Alumni Relations, and student services.

Harms Technology Center, Scottsbluff

College of Nursing West Nebraska Division

Offering a bachelors of science degree, a master (MSN), and doctoral (DNP/PhD) level degrees, the West Nebraska Division of the College of Nursing provides advanced learning technologies and state-of-the-art learning services. Students engage in clinical training at several local medical facilities, physician offices, and health care centers. Among them is the Regional West Medical Center, a fully accredited 184-bed acute care regional medical center that serves western Nebraska, northeast Colorado, and southeast Wyoming. It is one of only three Level II trauma centers in Nebraska and has earned the status of regional referral center. The UNMC College of Nursing is located on the northern edge of town and is only two minutes from the Regional West Medical Center.

Durham Outpatient Center, c. 2004

Outpatient Care Center

Named Durham Outpatient Center in 1998


The six-level, 266,500-square-foot facility is dedicated to outpatient care and teaching. A suite of 10 operating rooms is located within the building, along with a central sterile supply facility, loading docks, and warehouse.

Lied Transplant Center

Built 1999
Named Hixson-Lied Transplant Center in 2017


The Lied Transplant Center, a partnership between the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Nebraska Medicine, provides UNMC researchers and multidisciplinary health-care professionals greater opportunities for interaction and collaboration. This unique environment allows our clinicians and researchers to develop innovative practice models in transplantation that are often essential to provide optimal care. The facility was one of the first of its kind when it was built in 1999 and includes the Multi-Organ Transplant Clinic, Ambulatory Care Center, Peggy D. Cowdery Patient Care Center that provides cancer treatment for patients 24 hours a day, laboratories dedicated to transplant research, a Patient Resource Center, Health Education Center for transplant patients and families, and hotel rooms.

Durham Research Center, Tower 2

The Durham Research Center, Tower 1 is 289,000 square feet, has 10 levels, 117 research laboratories, a 319-seat auditorium, three classrooms, and 15 conference/seminar rooms. This research tower employs 350 staff members, including 80 principal investigators. The research tower enables UNMC to explore advancement in several areas, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurosciences, transplantation biology, genetics, and eye research.
 
Durham Research Center, Tower 2 is a twin to Tower 1. Tower 2 has 10 levels, 95 laboratories, and 252,179 square feet. The facilities are named in honor of the late Charles (Chuck) Durham, the former CEO and chair of the engineering and architectural firm HDR, Inc.

Hixson-Lied Center, c. 2021

Hixson-Lied Center for Clinical Excellence

Built 2005


The Hixson-Lied Center for Clinical Excellence was constructed for a cost of $56.5 million. The building has four levels with a total of 165,000 square feet. It houses the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the Emergency Room, Radiology, and 27 state-of-the-art operating rooms. The building connects the University and Clarkson Towers. Sitting atop the building is a rooftop garden next door to the NICU, where families and patients can go to relax or rejuvenate.

Weigel Williamson Center, c. 2009

Weigel Williamson Center for Visual Rehabilitation

Built 2008

This 4,540 square foot facility, located just off the main UNMC campus at 38th Avenue and Jones Streets, is a residential home with assistive technology for people with low vision. Low vision is a visual impairment resulting from eye disease, trauma, or stroke not correctable by surgery, regular glasses, or medicine. The most common conditions causing low vision are macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, stroke, and hereditary diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa.

Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education

Built 2008

The Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education is a 134,183 square foot facility that brings together educational components, student support services, and faculty offices used by multiple UNMC colleges. It is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, clinical skills laboratories, small and large amphitheaters, small group classrooms, interactive study rooms, private study spaces, a student commons area, a snack shop and bookstore, a campus events center, and the UNMC College of Medicine administrative offices.

Bellevue Medical Center, c. 2010

Bellevue Medical Center

Built 2010

Located at the corner of Highway 370 and 25th Street, the Bellevue Medical Center was built in 2010 and became part of Nebraska Medicine in 2014. Opening the medical center was the result of collaboration between community members, physicians, nurses, and administration, who all played significant roles in hospital planning, technology, and patient care models. It is also one of the most energy efficient hospitals in the Midwest.

Home Instead Center for Successful Aging

The Home Instead Center for Successful Aging represents a new model of care that is unique, not only to the Omaha metropolitan area, but to the entire Midwestern region. The Center encompasses the expertise of care providers from across the health care spectrum including geriatric medicine, geriatric psychiatry, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, exercise science, and whole-person wellness.

Center for Nursing Science, 2015

Constructed at a cost of $14 million, the Center for Nursing Science is an additional structure located at the east end of the College of Nursing building on 42nd Street and Dewey Avenue. The 42,550 square foot, multi-level structure houses classrooms, labs, faculty offices, and nursing research facilities.

McIntosh College of Nursing Building

College of Nursing Northern Division

Northeast Community College Campus, Norfolk
Built 2010

Costing $12.9 million and located on the Northeast Community College campus in Norfolk, the 43,747 square foot facility houses Northeast Community College’s basic nurse aide, licensed practical nursing, and associate degree nursing programs. It also houses UNMC’s bachelors of science in nursing, masters of science in nursing, and doctoral degree programs. It contains state-of-the-art classrooms, large hospital labs, computer and testing labs, high tech simulation rooms, and clinical skills labs. The Norfolk community raised $11.9 million in private funds and received more than $1 million as a capstone gift from Norfolk philanthropists J. Paul and Eleanor McIntosh.
